Spiral Galaxy M106 in Canes Venatici

Description:

A large spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. M106 is 25 million light years away, and consists of some 200 billion solar masses (a total stellar population of 400 billion or more stars). Also visible in this image are several faint, distant galaxies, the brightest of which (bottom right) is NGC4248 which probably is a satellite galaxy of M106.

Planewave 24" CDK telescope, and FLI P09000 camera

Processing Used:

10 x 5 minutes luminance, and 8 x 3 minutes RGB for a total exposure of 2 hours and 15 minutes, processed in Maxim DL and Photoshop
